And there was a time not long ago
When the sun did shine,
And the sower sowed
And the rain did rain
And the crops did grow.
It was a time before machinery,
A time before certainty,
A time before we bought the lie —
A time before the farmer died
When we had trusting hearts and human souls.
It was a time not very long ago

- The Farmer and the Field, Jason Upton

Welcome, friend.

Here I write about farming, faith, ancestral food and traditions, and sometimes books, too — books I’m reading, and books I’m writing.

Farming, writing, and the gracious hand of the Lord have been the constants throughout a life of change. Pasture People is born out of a desire to share these loves with others. This newsletter is a place where all those things collide — sometimes clumsily, sometimes more gracefully — with my musings about our ordinary home life here on a tiny homestead.

So welcome to my table, my hearth, my garden. Let me pour you a cup of something nourishing and slide a well-loved book into your hands. I hope I can show you something beautiful before you go on your way back into the wild, frightening, and marvelous world.

What you can expect to see here:

Short vignettes of rural life & its lessons, personal Farm Notes, and longer-form essays about authentic living for paid subscribers.

Substack is a great place for writers because it allows direct support from the reader. Writing is a passion and a joy for me, but it still takes time, effort, and often research to produce these articles for you to read. Whether you subscribe to simply the free newsletter or you support my writing financially, know that the fact you are here offering your time and attention to what I have to say means so much to me. That is a gift, and I sincerely thank you for it!

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!
Serve the LORD with gladness!
Come into His presence with singing!
Know that the LORD is God!
It is He who made us, and we are His;
We are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

~ Psalm 100:1-3
