Books, Ballads, & Bites Vol. 1
Reading recs, my favorite songs lately, and a recipe from our kitchen.
“Eating and reading are two pleasures that combine admirably.” ~ C.S. Lewis
Welcome to March. And welcome to the first installment of Books, Ballads, and Bites!
What have we here? Books, Ballads, & Bites will be a bi-weekly round-up of notable literature and music that I’ll be recommending for your reading and listening pleasure. Also, I’ll be sharing a recipe, something we’ve made this week in our kitchen, which I hope you enjoy recreating in yours.
Reading is something I have fallen in love with all over again in the last several months. It’s such a broad pastime — you might be reading for information’s sake, for edification, for simple enjoyment, or just to assuage boredom, and it’s all valuable. Recently I heard on a podcast that there are studies showing that reading is proven to lower blood pressure, relieve stress, and improve sleep. That’s not even counting all of the cognitive benefits of reading, the sensations associated with being read to as a child, and just all the information you end up gathering when you read a lot of books!
For me, this renewed love of reading has been part of a long process of retraining myself not to believe that everything I do must be obviously productive. It’s fine to just sit and read a book, even if there is work that could be done. Reading is productive, but more importantly, it can be so enjoyable. I am a firm believer in enjoying life.
